As we can infer tariff has reduced imports up to 50%. Consumers’ surpluses decrease by a+b+c+d. Producers’ gains are area a. The deadweight loss from the tariff are areas b + d .
“In deadweight loss consumer losses not offset by government tariff revenue or producer surplus” ( Thompson 2006, p.113)
Consequently area b + d is the sum of the area of triangles b + d

Therefore as it is derived from the diagram: b = = 10
Similarly d = = 20
As a result deadweight loss from the tariff is: b + d = 10 + 20 = 30
Question 5
Heckscher - Ohlin Model, Intra-industry Trade (Ch. 6, Vol. 1)

The Heckscher-Ohlin Model as a theory relies on the existence of differences in input factors between different countries. This theorem emphasizes on the differences of input combination amongst trade partners in the world trade market(countries) in order to explain a country’s decisions regarding its total trade policy ( imports- exports). As a result countries exchange and trade off products and goods between different sectors of their economies.
On the other side, Intra Industry Trade includes the simultaneous imports and exports of the same sector of a national economy. Moreover, in an economic system most of the producers aim to the satisfaction of “economic needs” for the majority of consumers. However there are minorities of consumers who are not in favour of the domestic production thus, they rely on imported goods from foreign markets. These minorities prefer to consume “differentiated products” of one sector comparing to the majority of consumers who are not interested in this kind of markets. The preferences of these specific groups of consumers can only be satisfied by the implementation of Intra Industry Trade.
The factors that facilitate the growth of Intra Industry Trade are:
a) The existence of scale economies
b) The existence of consumers who seek to purchase differentiated products
At this point we must underline the fact that, the production of differentiated products is strongly related with the existence scale economies.
It is obvious from the previous analysis that Heckscher-Ohlin Model cannot explain adequately the theory of Intra Industry Trade. The most important reasons for this fact are:
1) While Heckscher-Ohlin Model supports that the trade between two countries will grow over time as long as there are significant differences in inputs mix among them, Intra Industry Trade develops according to the degree of similarities in terms of production factors that are placed in different countries.
2) Autarky prices as a determination factor of the products in which a country will specialize in and export to other countries (Heckscher-Ohlin Model) do not play significant role in Intra Industry Trade. That is, because in terms of international trade economies of scale ( favoured for the production of differentiated goods) are able to achieve lower costs and prices in the production and distribution of goods and services in a small country than they would if the same country had conditions of autarky equilibrium (close market). In international competition economies of scale can increase the exports of a small country compared to that of big countries.
3) The Heckscher-Ohlin Model predicts the increase in income of the production factor that a country is abundant in. In contrast, Intra Industry Trade predicts the increase of income for all inputs when economies of scale in the production of goods are achieved.
